3 “A Bloody Night in Breathitt County

This book took lots of research as the newspapers and court papers were all done away with to hide the evidence.  The jailer, Smokey Allen, was a very powerful man in politics and so were his enemies, the Nobles and the Watts.   The book contains many articles from 1921 from the Lexington newspapers and the Jackson Times.  Three prisoners had been locked up in the Breathitt County jail and they were the family members of the Nobles and Watts from Lost Creek.  The story passed down the years claimed a deal was made between the jailer and the Nobles: the prisoners in exchange for 20 gallons of moonshine.  Things went very wrong when the Nobles came into Jackson to get their family members from jail.  Shooting started and the jailer lost his youngest daughter who was packing a child, another daughter, and a nephew.  The men accused of doing the shooting were never caught even as the Governor sent troops in, posses were formed from citizens, and county lawmen.  Hundreds of men covered the mountains every day for months but never found all the men responsible.  A chapter is in this book about the famous Clayhole election battle where 4 were killed and 11 wounded.  Also in the book is the 1850 and 1860 Breathitt County slave list.

4 “Hillbilly from Heaven; Hardshell, KY, USA
