a. Was a farmer prior to the Civil War.
b.Entered Union Army as a private in Co K, 14th KY Volunteer Cavalry on 3 Dec 1862 at Booneville, KY. Promoted to Orderly Sgt for his gallantry at the Battle of Perryville (3 Dec 1862?). Promoted to 1st Sgt on 1 Sep 1863. He was honorably discharged on 24 March 1864 at Camp Nelson, KY. Under command of Capt. Wm. Strong.
c. In 1865, Governor Bramlett appointed Colonel of the 18th Kentucky militia.
d. Lived in Irvine, EstillCounty, KY in 1865.
e. After the war, attended schools of the vicinage, taught school awhile and educated himself.
f. Studied law for 2 years under the supervision of John H. Riddell, brother of Kitty.
g. Moved to Jackson, Breathitt County, KY in 1866.
h. Admitted to the bar in Jackson, Kentucky in fall of 1867. Soon afterwards appointed circuit court clerk of Owsley County to fill an unexpired term of two years.
i. Moved to Booneville, Owsley County, KY during 1867.
j. Moved to Washington, Hempstead County, Arkansas in 1869.
k. Moved to Ft. Smith, Ark. in 1871
l. Practiced law in Ft. Smith, Ark until 1889, chiefly criminal practice in the federal court..
m. A liberal republican until 1876.
i. Moved to Oklahoma with the "First Court" in 1889 (Muskogee, Creek Nation) and before the First Land Rush.
j. National Democratic Chairman from the Indian Territory, 1896-1900.
k. Lost congressional election for Indian Territory on a "technicality in 1896.
l. Gave keynote speech at 1900 National Democratric Convention in Chicago.
m. Met William Jennings Bryant; became his campaign manager in the southwest.
n. Turned down Democratic nomination for first governorship of Oklahoma in 1907.
o. Applied for veterans invalid pension in February 1907.
p. Was entitled to a veterans pension of $20/month from Sept 1913 which would increase to $24 in 1918.
